Why Every Distance Runner Needs a Chiropractor In Their Life

Running & Chiropractic Care

Running is hard, mentally, emotionally, and physically. While I can’t promise mental and emotional support for my distance running friends (though the spine affects the central nervous system so anything controlled by the central nervous system will likely experience improvements with chiropractic care), helping to deal with the physical demands of running is right in my wheelhouse.

 Can I Avoid Injury?

Running is tough on the body, but while there are some risks that runners just can’t avoid, there is actually a lot that can be done to prevent running injuries and to address injuries that are in the making before they becomes too serious. Chiropractic for runners aims squarely at typically preventable injuries like knee, ankle, back, and hip ailments.  Sure, some injuries are born of an abrupt wrong movement that leads to a sudden “snap,” but most injuries develop over time.

I have cared for runners and other athletes for years at Hart Family Chiropractic, and it’s obvious for both me and my run-loving patients the connection that chiropractic care has to injury-free running. Chiropractic is an underutilized healthcare approach in the amateur running community (it’s widely used by professionals, however- more on that below.) It is understandable to not naturally consider the spine when pondering a knee injury, or to think that your hip is out of alignment when it’s your ankle that hurts.

Why Do I Need a Chiropractor?

Chiropractors are experts in the musculoskeletal system- so we see the connection between an out of place hip and your bum ankle. Coming in for an evaluation and adjustment can go a long way towards diagnosing, fixing, and preventing runners injuries. Come in with a running injury and I may find that your hip is out of alignment, you have a vertebrae out of place, or perhaps one of your legs is longer than the other. Many runners come in to the office and are surprised to learn that the cause of their “running” injury is not even running at all! Often I see clients who sit at a desk all day. Sitting with poor posture for long periods of time strains one part of the body while other parts loosen. Going out on a run after a day spent staring at the screen puts this uneven pressure on your spine, hips, and pelvis and is basically an injury just waiting to happen.

 Who Else Uses Chiropractors?

Professional athletes have long been using chiropractic care to ensure that their bodies are up to the demands of their sport. You can guarantee, for example, that each team’s chiropractor will be in heavy demand at the Super Bowl this weekend. You don’t have to be in the NFL to take advantage of chiropractic benefits, however.

One of my favorite amateur runners to follow online is Ultra Runner Girl. If you’re looking for a runner-approved endorsement of chiropractic care, check out her comments about how chiropractic has helped her to complete (and win!) 100 mile races. Her experience speaks volumes about what is possible for a runner who takes care of herself and takes advantage of chiropractic expertise.

“As an elite athlete, recovery and therapy is essential to staying healthy and competitive. I have seen Dr. Devin Young as my chiropractor for years and see him twice a week during training. His care has been especially helpful leading up to and including the Boston Marathon. I have been able to recover faster and easier after races.”
